This project, until now, is achieving its objectives as set out in the original application and the previous approved report (IR1). During the first 2 years of the project, all outcomes and major related activities were performed (some activities were performed with very short delays, due to the delayed start-up of the project that was not the responsibility of the contractor or the consortium members; for this reason, the European Commission has already agreed to an extension of the project duration period until the 29th of February 2008), and no activities were cancelled.

Indicators of progress for achieving the project’s 2 years objectives are the activities performed and related outcomes achieved until now:

  • The development of fully comprehensive contemporary postgraduate curricula in hospitality and tourism management has been completed successfully. To succeed this, a number of activities were successfully carried out, including:
  • assessment of the needs for postgraduate studies in tourism and hospitality at the targeted Partner Countries at EG, SY and LB;
  • assessment of the capability of the beneficiary universities at EG, SY and LB to implement contemporary postgraduate programs in tourism;
  • identification of the “core body of knowledge” that has to be incorporated in the postgraduate curriculum;
  • collection and analysis of secondary and primary data related to curriculum development in hospitality and tourism, and also related to the competencies required for the graduates of such courses at the three partner countries;
  • and, eventually, development of a comprehensive contemporary postgraduate curriculum in hospitality and tourism management. Please note that this curriculum is totally new for the beneficiary universities, it has not been offered until now, and after it will be adopted by the Senates (and Ministries) of the relevant universities (and countries) it will lead to a totally new program of study that was not offered before at these countries. The beneficiary consortium members at EG, SY and LB have actively participated in the designing and development of the new postgraduate curriculum.
  • As requested by the E.C. , the three universities at EG, SY and LB have started working effectively towards the accreditation of the new curriculum by the partner countries educational authorities (university senates and ministries of higher education). It is expected that the local accreditation process will be completed before the end of the project. However, it should be noted, that local accreditation at EG, SY and LB was not foreseen at the original project application. The overall process for local accreditation of the new curriculum involves 3 major steps:
  • formal approval of the curriculum by the university Department/Faculty,
  • formal approval of the curriculum by the university Senate, and
  • accreditation of the curriculum by the Supreme council of Universities

At the moment, the project in EG is about to achieve the first step (formal approval of the curriculum by the university Department/Faculty).

  • Comprehensive syllabi, teaching methodologies, student assessment methods, staff requirements and supporting bibliography for each new module of the proposed postgraduate curriculum in hospitality and tourism management have been developed.They  have not been offered until now in any our programs of postgraduate study, and that they conform to ECTS requirements and the Bologna process.
  • The process for the development of purpose-written educational and teaching material (as required for some new curricula) and the purchasing of books has already started.
